In this day and age, we are accustomed to having things instantly. In fact, we are so used to paying for services that we have forgotten that nature often has exactly what we need. The same goes for bug repellent. Many people are not aware that there are some natural and easy-to-make repellents from ingredients that are right under our noses. Keep on reading for some homemade mosquito repellent recipes guaranteed to keep the bugs away without any side effects.
The Simplest Repellent
Who would have thought that beer with mouthwash could work as a mosquito repellent? Mix three bottles of beer, roughly 500 ml, with a bottle of regular mouthwash, and three cups of Epsom salt. Once the salt is diluted, you can spray them right away in your backyard.
Did you know that garlic also works as a natural mosquito repellent? Guess the mosquitoes hate the smell, too. Anyway, crush three bulbs of garlic with water until becomes a puree. Then, strain and add about one gallon of water. This is a concentrated repellent. To use, dilute a quarter cup of the mixture with water in a spray bottle. Shake well before use. By the way, you can spice it up by replacing one of the bulbs of garlic with a jalapeno pepper. This will make the mixture more powerful.
Use Something New
As you all know, some essential oils also work as a repellent. Of course, not all of them have the quality. Citronella and lavender are the ones most people use in their repellent mixture. However, you also can experiment a bit using spearmint, basil, geranium, and tea tree essential oils. All you need to do is to mix a quarter cup of lemon juice, a drop of vanilla extract, and not more than twenty drops of the essential oil of your choice. Dilute the solution with 2 oz water and don’t forget to shake well before use.
These mixtures can give you protection for almost two months long. Just spray them across the lawn, on the benches, and the corners where you often spend time. Feel free to keep the solution in smaller containers in case you camp a lot and want a more compact repellent to-go. Since these homemade solutions are cheap and natural, you don’t have to worry about any chemical residues.
